Sustainable Branded Merchandise: How to Verify It
A guide to evaluating sustainable merchandise: review the materials, certifications, product documentation and the full cost before you request a proposal.

To choose sustainable merchandise for a company, ask for evidence about the specific product and explain what decision each document must support. A word such as "recycled" or "eco" does not on its own demonstrate the composition, the traceability or the total impact of an item.

Start with the use, not the label
Define who will receive the item, what they will use it for and how long you expect it to stay useful to them. Compare alternatives by function, lifespan, repair or reuse, packaging and transport. A reusable product adds no value if it does not fit the habits of whoever receives it.

Link each claim to evidence

Certifications have different scopes. GOTS sets requirements for textiles across processing stages and the supply chain. FSC explains how certified forest material is identified and tracked through production and distribution. OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100 relates to testing for harmful substances in textiles. None of these references automatically demonstrates that a complete product has the lowest environmental impact, or that other components are certified.
Do not attribute a certification to a whole range because it appears on a supplier's product sheet. Check that the document covers the model, the composition, the manufacturer or the relevant operations, and the purchase period.
Check the item you are going to order
Ask for a product sheet for the model and review the materials, measurements, weight, care instructions and limitations of the branding. If the environmental claim matters for a purchasing policy, request the documentation together with the offer and keep the version that corresponds to the chosen reference.

Recycled, organic or forest-origin materials can answer different questions. Compare them with an equivalent functional alternative and avoid presenting a single characteristic as proof of general environmental superiority.
Prepare a verifiable quote request
Include the quantity, the audience, the intended use, the total budget, the logo and the date you need to receive the order. Point out what documentation you need for purchasing or internal reports. Ask for the offer to identify the item, the personalisation, the packaging, the transport, the taxes and any certified claim that will be communicated.
